HOLE 1The First at St Mellion . . . as difficult an opening hole as you could ever wish for. The pin is out of sight, and the hole slopes away sharply down to the right. Your tee shot needs to be towards the right half of the fairway . . . else you could end up in the rough to the left, or even worse. On your second shot, the green will be well below you. The green is raised, and so the best strategy is to land the ball directly onto it. Beware the bunkers to the left and the right . . . and that tree on the left front of the green. The two-tiered putting surface slopes down from the back, so any putt will be easier from the front. If you manage a par, youÆll have made a good start.
